Based on a “Staycation” theme, the Walsh residence received several Canadian Home Builders’ Association recognitions including both Keystone and Tommie Gold Awards for Best Single Landscape Design. This project was also an “Award Finalist – Best Single Family Landscape Design” for the prestige Georgie Award.
The homeowner said: “When I arrive at home, I want to feel like I arrived at my personal resort.” The complete Kamloops landscape design and build included custom terraced retaining walls in the front yard, a SYNlawn chipping tee box with a full sized putting green, a pond-less water feature, custom basalt stairs, meticulously planted garden beds, a fit pit sitting area for entertainment, flagstone pathways and an automatic landscape lighting system to bring the landscape to life at night. In the end, the residential resort landscape theme was an absolute success.
In order to offset the overall steepness of the property, terraced Allan Block retaining walls were installed in the front and side yard. A variety of garden beds were planted, each with handpicked organics to add colour and contrast. To top it off, an automatic drip irrigation system was installed to keep the plants and trees self-sufficient in a dry Kamloops climate.
The family wanted the benefits of grass, but desired a low-maintenance landscape. In response, Lyons implemented SYNLawn artificial turf. The residential golf course began with a raised tee box on the west end of the backyard. The property is includes a private forest backdrop so practicing the long ball is always an option. Alternatively, users can chip shot onto a SYNLawn putting green on the east end of the yard. Continue down the basalt stairs and recover the golf ball from the sandy white bunker, complete with a mini sand rake. It would not be a surprise to find the ball in the bunker as there is a deceiving amount of grade on this mini golf course, with multiple holes on the putting green to keep things interesting.
Look out for the water hazard! The water feature is an Aquascape pond-less waterfall system, which functions similar to a downhill creek, except the water feeds through a pump and underground pipe that brings it back up to the top of the waterfall. Flagstones, rocks, and boulders were all hand-placed to ensure quality construction and proper water flow.
Continue across the basalt bridge to a private sitting area surrounding an outdoor gas fire pit. Basalt benches were strategically placed to create a welcoming and intimate atmosphere. The sound of flowing water and landscape lighting sets the mood for an evening of entertainment or relaxation.
The verdict? The goal is not the same for everyone. Some homeowners want simple and maintenance free landscaping, while others want a backyard oasis that they will enjoy on a daily basis. Based on how the landscape will be utilized, Lyons can design and install landscape that is catered to your lifestyle.
